    Rosa de la Cruz’s $30M collection to be auctioned at Christie’s

    The extensive collection of Cuban philanthropist and art collector Rosa de la Cruz will be sold in a series of auctions beginning this May at an evening sale in New York.

    De la Cruz, who died last month at age 81, was instrumental in Miami’s art scene. Together with her husband Carlos, she opened a 30,000-square-foot museum in Miami to display their contemporary art collection, which includes 1,000 works.

    Those responsible for these works range from blue-chippers like Wade Guyton and Albert Oehlen to younger artists like Su Su and Christina Quarles. Thanks to their collection, the de la Cruzes repeatedly earned a position ARTnews Top 200 Collection list.

    Artnet News He first announced the sale of the collection on Friday. The collection is likely to be sold by the auction house for a total of $30 million, with lots ranging from approximately $5,000 to $5 million.

    Ana Mendieta from Cuba stands out among the artists in the de la Cruz collection. In 2015, the year de la Cruzes’ Miami space held the Mendieta show, the pair had 24 of their works; At that time, it was the largest set of pieces that Mendieta had privately, he says Artnet News.

    “Rosa was an incredibly generous patron who spent 20 years advocating for the artists she deeply loved,” said Isabella Lauria, Christie’s 21st Century. ARTnews. “The De la Cruz Collection now showcases the world’s most significant private holdings of Ana Mendieta, one of the most radical artistic voices of our time, who has recently been receiving the praise she deserves, both institutionally and largely within popular culture. We’re really excited to see how our collectors respond this spring.”

    The last time one of Mendieta’s works appeared in an evening auction at Christie’s was in 2016, his work from 1982. The Quickening of the Flesh: The Labyrinth of Venus Series It sold for $143,000 against a high estimate of $100,000. As the auction house has announced, a selection of Mendieta works will be sold in one of the evening sales, although it has not been specified which one.
