Kirandeep Grewal’s artistic practice is a fusion of storytelling, cultural exploration, and a deep connection to community. Based in Canberra, she moves effortlessly between different mediums—canvas, textiles, live performances—creating works that reflect her journey through life. Her art is not just a visual experience; it is an extension of her travels, interactions with artisans, and an ongoing dialogue with tradition and innovation.

A meticulous artist, Grewal approaches each project with research, detailed sketches, and careful material selection, ensuring that every piece is both intentional and meaningful. Drawing inspiration from ancient Indian artistic traditions, her work carries a sense of reverence and craftsmanship, infused with autobiographical elements.

Beyond her studio, she navigates the challenges of balancing artistic passion with the demands of business, always seeking new ways to sustain her practice. In this interview, Grewal shares insights into her creative process, and the impact she hopes her work will have on others.

    Here is the artist’s interview

What is your creative process like?

Kirandeep: I am a multidisciplinary artist who approaches each art project with thorough research and detailed drawings in both black and white and color. The entire process is meticulously hand-drawn and designed, with careful consideration given to the choice of art materials depending on the specific needs of the project, whether it be painting on canvas, silk, or textile art. Throughout the creative process, the self-expression of the theme plays a central role. Before finalising a piece, I take a step back to reflect, making adjustments or even starting over if necessary. This commitment to continuous learning and the incorporation of new ideas allows for growth and evolution within my art practice.

Do any personal experiences shape your work?

Kirandeep: My artwork is deeply rooted in my personal experiences, making it autobiographical in nature. Each piece contains a hidden element that reflects my journey through life. Travel has been a significant influence on my work, exposing me to diverse landscapes, communities, and cultures that have sparked new ideas and perspectives. My rich cultural heritage and family traditions also play a crucial role in shaping the themes, subject matter, and aesthetic choices in my art.

As an artist, my personal philosophy is heavily influenced by the ethos of ancient Indian artists. Their dedication to craftsmanship, storytelling, and spiritual connection with their art has inspired me to approach my work with a similar level of reverence and intention. By infusing my pieces with elements of my own experiences and cultural background, I try to create art that is not only visually captivating but also deeply meaningful and reflective of my identity.

What challenges do you face as an artist? My core inspiration is from our ancient world and my surroundings.

Kirandeep: Facing challenges has strengthened my art practice, making it more resilient and adaptable to the ever-changing economic landscape in Australia. In order to ensure its sustainability, I continuously enhance my skills in areas such as digital marketing, website design, and business development. However, managing the business aspects of art, including marketing, social media, networking, and administrative tasks, can often detract from the time I have available for creating art. Balancing these responsibilities can be a challenge, as artists today must juggle multiple roles within their practice. This experience has also made me aware of the importance of self-care and taking time for myself after completing an art project. Careful planning and creating a daily to-do list are essential for the smooth running of my art practice.  By prioritizing time management and self-care, I am able to navigate the demands of running a successful art practice while still allowing myself the space to create and innovate.

What do you want people to feel when they see your art?

Kirandeep: Kirandeep: As an artist, I believe that my work has been successful if it has inspired viewers to think differently, encouraged them to explore their own creativity, and brought them joy and a sense of connection. The emotional impact of my art may vary from person to person, but when I hear that a particular piece has resonated with someone and led to a shared experience, it is truly special to me. Creating art that evokes a shared experience is a rewarding and fulfilling aspect of my work as an artist.

Kirandeep Grewal’s work extends beyond aesthetics, creating connections between history, culture, and personal experience. Through her art, she invites viewers to see the world through her eyes—where tradition meets contemporary expression, and storytelling takes center stage. Her dedication to craftsmanship, learning, and community engagement makes her work more than just visual; it becomes an experience that resonates with those who encounter it. Grewal’s journey is one of resilience and evolution, constantly adapting and growing while remaining rooted in the values that inspire her. As she continues her practice, she hopes her art sparks thought, joy, and shared experiences among those who engage with it.
