The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts fuses global residencies with a philosophy and non-art Ph.D.
As a truly nomadic institution, the Institute of Doctoral Arts in Visual Arts (IDSVA) does not have a campus. We are everywhere our students and teachers are. Below is a sampling of notes shared by students during recent stays in Mexico City, Athens, and Marrakech.
“IDSVA appealed to me because of the way it was structured. I am an international teacher, so I wanted to continue working on my program, and IDSVA gave me the opportunity to do so. Because of the online format, and then the intensive stays, I was able to continue working, be with my family, but then I had these very rich and intense learning opportunities through three years of work.’
Maggie McKee, PhD candidate, Cohort ’20
“If I were to create a PhD program, this would be it. I love how structured it is. It’s a hybrid program, so you do a lot of coursework, you go to lectures online, and then you go on these amazing residencies all over the world.”
Monica Bryant, Cohort ’21
“IDSVA’s mix of online and in-person stays has taken me on a fascinating journey around the world.”
Rikiesha Metzger, PhD student, Cohort ’19
“The ability to travel is one of the reasons why this program is so special, and one of the reasons I chose to do it. to be [in Mexico City] it’s magical.”
Amy Schuessler, PhD candidate, Cohort ’20
“I feel very privileged to be able to study with these people, to have conversations with these people and also to challenge them because they have never challenged me… We are in wonderful beautiful places, we are traveling. the world, and we are able to live with each other.”
Elliot Bowers, Cohort ’21
